TEF Canada Section A (expression écrite): finish the news article
In Section A you receive the start of a short news story (fait divers) and must write what happens next. It is short, but candidates lose marks by ignoring the journalistic style or writing one block of text. Here is the official format, a practice prompt and an example with feedback.
Official format

- Document: the beginning of a press article (rubrique faits divers).

Ottawa, mardi matin.
Feedback against the official criteria
How this example meets the official requirements (ScoreJapa's reading, not an official mark)
- Transmettre des informations (suite logique)
- Answers the reader's questions: why the suitcase was lost, how it was found, what was inside, what happens next.
- Style d'article de presse
- Neutral third person, a quoted witness, reported facts (« selon la compagnie »), no personal opinion.
- Plusieurs paragraphes
- Three short paragraphs: explanation, reaction, outcome — as the instruction requires.
- Temps du récit
- Correct mix of passé composé, imparfait and plus-que-parfait (« avait été envoyée »).
- Longueur
- About 95 words, above the 80-word minimum, written comfortably in 25 minutes.
To score higher
- Add a precise detail (a date, a number) to make the report more journalistic.
- Stay consistent with the opening: same place, same people, same tense of narration.
